Purple Mountain Majesties

January 3, 2021 By Marylee

For those of us who live in or near the majestic Rocky Mountains, this pendant will speak to you. Whether you ski them, hike them, or just enjoy looking at them, the Rockies are a symbol of inspiration.

In 1893, at the age of 33, Katherine Lee Bates had taken a train trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to teach a short summer school session at Colorado College. She was deeply inspired by the majestic view of the Great Plains from high atop Pikes Peak. On the pinnacle of that mountain, the words of the poem started to come to her. She wrote them down upon returning to her hotel room at the original Antlers Hotel. The original poem known as “Pikes Peak” is now the lyrics to the song we all know as “America the Beautiful”

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
